  Humans are essentially putting the brakes on the next ice age, according to a September 2009 study that represents the most extensive work to date on Arctic climate change.

  Arctic temperatures (seen in blue, above) have cooled over the past 2,000 years due to a natural tilt in Earth’s axis. But human-caused global warming reversed that trend in the mid-1990s (seen in red).

  Defra has come in for damning criticism for failing to tackle air pollution in a report published by the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies (CCJS).

• China villagers riot over polluting plant: residents – Yahoo! News

  Villagers in southeastern China attacked police and took local officials hostage in protests over a wastewater treatment plant they accuse of pollution, residents and state media said Tuesday.

  Police had to intervene in a bid to rescue two officials taken captive in the unrest in the city of Quanzhou in coastal Fujian province, residents told AFP.

  They said anger over a foul smell emitted by the plant and suspicions that it was polluting the local environment had been building for years.

• Corporate pranksters show a lot of bottle in Bhopal fight

  Dow has come under fire from activists because in 2001 it took over Union Carbide, which owned and ran the pesticide plant in the central Indian city where the world’s worst industrial accident took place.

  In December 1984 a storage tank leaked toxic gas methyl isocyanate into the air. More than 500,000 people were exposed to the deadly fumes.

  Estimates of the death toll vary but it is generally accepted between 8,000 and 10,000 died within the first three days and some 25,000 since.

  Thousands more suffered health problems from the incident and subsequent pollution at the site.

  As the 25th anniversary of the disaster approaches, activists are pressuring Dow to clean up the area’s contaminated water supply.

  “The company has claimed that it is not responsible and that Union Carbide had settled its responsibility before Dow became the owner, but water in the city is still contaminated,” said Mr Bonnano.

  Of all the world’s developed nations, ­Ireland is the one that is closest to a depression. The banking system is shot, the housing market has collapsed, unemployment is expected to rise to more than one in six of the population. The deterioration in the public finances – and this is saying something – has been even more acute than in Britain. The Irish economy is expected to contract this year by just under 10%.

  The good news is that Ireland’s predicament makes it a prime candidate for a “green new deal” – policies aimed not just at helping the economy through a difficult time but also to make it better able to face the twin challenges of a world where fossil fuels are dwindling and the temperature is rising.

• My Weekend with the Electric Mini Cooper (Mini-e) and my review, photos, and videos.

  Introduction:

  The Mini-e is in a ‘field trial’ in the US. It is an all-electric car. It has the same body as a Mini Cooper S. People were invited to apply for one. Well, actually, for a 1-year lease. My sister and her husband applied and recieved one of the first ones to be delivered in LA. (They are only availalbe in the LA and New York areas.) At the end of the year the car will have to go back to Mini Cooper for evaluation.

  We picked up the Mini-e at Alexander Mini in LA on Saturday, May 30, 2009.

• Tribes in Peru to get $0.68/acre for protecting Amazon forest

  Indigenous communities in Peru will be paid 5 soles ($1.70) per hectare ($0.68/acre) of preserved forest under a new conservation plan proposed by Peru’s Ministry of Environment, reports the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) in its bi-monthly update.

  Antonio Brack, Peru’s Minister of Environment, says the scheme could generate $18.3 million dollars for forest communities, which control some 11 million hectares of forest in the country, beginning in 2010. Brack says money has already been set aside for the program in the 2010 budget.

  They should be paying more per acre and this should be rolled out in more countries – still, great news.

• Coda unveils ‘practical’ all-electric sedan | Green Tech – CNET News

  You could call electric car company Coda Automotive the anti-Tesla.

  The company, formed by fleet vehicle provider Miles Electric, on Wednesday unveiled the Coda, a plain-looking electric car that’s designed for everyday use.

  The highway-capable four-door sedan can go between 90 and 120 miles on its lithium ion battery pack. It will be available to consumers in California in the fall of 2010 at a price of $45,000. The cost can be offset by about $10,000 from a federal tax credit and state incentives, the company said.
