In this, the second of my Smart Grid Heavy Hitters’ interviews, I talk to SAP’s Head of Industry Business Unit for Utilities, Stefan Engelhardt.
It was a great interview – in it we talked about:
- Stefan’s definition of a Smart Grid
- The benefits of Smart Grids to both the utilities and the customers of the utilities
- The state of Smart Grid rollouts to-date
- What an ideal Smart Grid would look like
- What barriers are holding up Smart Grid rollouts
- Which regions are further along in Smart Grid rollouts and which are lagging behind

Hi!
The United States power grid has become dangerously outdated over the past few decades. In recent years, parts of the country have been hard hit by power shortages and blackouts, ultimately costing the American consumer billions of dollars annually. As part of the recent economic stimulus package, the Obama administration has pledged $3.4 billion toward “smart grid” technology to stabilize the power grid in the event of a failure, better incorporate alternative energies, and vastly improve overall efficiency. A smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology to save energy and cost. During the summer, more fans are turning and more air conditioners are blowing to ensure that everyone stays cool. But all of this energy use comes at a price. How can the expansion of smart grid technology help consumers better manage their energy consumption and save money? Please let me know if you’d like to post a story about Smart Grids. I can provide video as well.
Best,
Marissa

Hi Marissa,
I regularly publish stories on Smart Grids, thanks. Here’s one I did just last week, for example http://greenmonk.net/understanding-the-smart-grid-my-treehugger-interview/
