Interesting parallel between corporations setting standards for their suppliers and US states setting standards in advance of federal intervention. California, of course, has been the long-term leader on this, saying to companies "if you want to sell in California, you'll meet our energy/pollution standards" -- refrigerators, cars, etc. Other states then adopt CA's standards -- let's hope corporations start adopting similar standards, and even one-upping each other on the quality of their standards.
