[...] I am at an event at IBM South Bank looking at some data center futures. The current session is with Christopher O’Connor, vice-president strategy and market management, Tivoli, who just raised an issue that I have been thinking about a lot lately. Just what will it mean to develop greener software? What would a green API look like? As usual- better performance is one answer to the problem. Lean is Green. [...]

Sadly I imagine that Mary is serious. Which is a pity given the egregious record held by the Big Four in just about every area of 'consulting' they've dipped their grubby paws. Yes, SMaRT it may sound, but smart it ain't for those companies that buy into the latest rhetoric from these masters of non-accountability.

thanks Mary. Smart shows some promise. I can imagine we'll see our first fraud in the space soon enough... do we trust the auditors, given their failures in financial audit? just wondering.

Conducting Life Cycle Assessments on the entire supply chain and having it audited by Ernst and Young is what the SMaRT (Sustainble Materials Rating Technology) does. It's a standard designed to catch the pollution of ground, air, water and sky and also has built in social equity safeguards.

To your point, Forbo Marmoleum Flooring found that becoming certified as Sustainable did indeed make them leaner and more profitable.

Interesting post, leads toward thinking about a tax system promoting sustainability. Of course, we need to escape taxing just CO2, it's the tip of the iceberg, but the rewards could be huge. Not for us, for our kids.
